When I was 8 I used to have a club house next to the 7-11 which is now Pizza Luce on Lyndale. I also used to go into the store in sweat pants and steal candy on a daily basis. (They let me).
I was born and raised on 32nd & Lyndale still live in the area. I know alot of us live in that area...so..now let's take a DU moment to rep our respective hoods...
Suburbanites are not exempt...

But... I was about there. 34th and Pleasant Ave S in minneapolis.. top floor of a duplex on the corner. right across from Lyndale School.. I used the kiddie pool as my stand-in toilet many times. Daycare at 32nd and Grand... remember Ted's grocery store.. up on 34th and grand.. blew up and shit. Paul's grocery down a block was the realness. I def remember the 7-11 there but it was gay. There was that one store on the corner when you were at Bryant Square Park, so no need for 7-11.
And when you were at Painter park, there was Olsen's on the corner.. and they had these little candies that were hella.
The flyest spot on lyndale back then was.... GRAND SLAM. the baseball card shop - fucking hella.

Born in St. Louis. Heaviest kid in the hospital at the time. Weighed in just under 11 pounds. Raised in Columbia Heights up the street from Star Central. Close to the Heights theater. It used to be a pit that showed budget movies. Now it's all redone and super nice. Big chandeliers, an organ and a dude that plays the organ before movies. Old school trailers, news reels, and cartoons before the flicks. Sort of by Apache 6 too. That place was a hole. I remember people smoking in the theater. It was fun though. I wish it wasn't closed. There used to be a store called Comics etc. It's still a comic book store now but it's called something different. Used to go there all the time.

One of St. Paul's oldest neighborhoods, Frogtown was settled in the late 19th century by German, Polish, Irish, Scandinavian, and French immigrants. Populated mainly by white working-class people until the 1970s, it is today more than half made up of Southeast Asians, African-Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics. As in many inner-city districts nationwide, incomes there are low and the crime rate is high. Local news stories focus on the area's struggles with drugs, prostitution, and violence-and keep its people themselves largely invisible.

St. Anthony used to be a neighborhood of Mpls, they split off in the 60's. STA is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Mpls, for the fact that it sits at the highest point in the metro region. Actually, my school is the highest point in Hennepin county. I can see seven watertowers from class.

im not saying big schools arent cool, bc they are dope, but id prefer to go to college in a smaller town. jsut my two cents

My doctor said this to me, "I grew up in Minneapolis but St.Paul is much better. Minneapolis is bad! Most of my sibblings still live in Minneapolis and they always give me hard time for living in St.Paul."
Who knows. I think that there is some weird rivalry that stems back to when St.Paul used the known as Pig's Island.

huh... there must be two white castles on Central. I know theres one in Columbia Heights.
Do you guys "fear" any of your neighborhoods? I was talking to someone from Milwaukee and they avoid certain parts of town. In Minneapolis, I never feel afraid of crime wherever I'm driving. Am I just naive?

dundee - white castle is on central, just over the 3rd ave. bridge. if you were downtown, went over the bridge... instead of taking a right onto university, go down another block and a half. You probably eat at Best Steak House all the time, joe
Let me try to add a little perspective as someone who has lived in both the cities of Minneapolis and Milwaukee. No comparison from a 'bad neighborhood' perspective. While I don't know that I'd put some of Milwaukee's north side to a category of 'straight ghetto', but its damn close. Nothing like that here in the Twins.

Midway/ Frogtown St Paul. Born and raised. I have no plans to leave. I can't. Right around Central.
They sell mixtapes at the corner store and Stage One used to hold down the cheapo too. Urban lights fell off when they buffed their mural, and their selection suffered when their clients got up in arms about it. Remember that anyone. My picture used to be on the wall with Naughty by Nature up in there but they took it down years ago. Now it's St. Paul Saints and Central Alumni keeping the city where it should be. Used to steal cars off of Vandalia and got arrested by the central medical building. University is a parking lot on summer weekends and people come from miles around to have heart attacks at porkys or get kicked out of the foodsmart parking lot. There was a pair of Paragryn falcons that used to pic off pigeons midflight at 100mph in my neighborhood before they demolished the Wards tower. People don't know how to rep the city right. Nostalgia is a bitch. Tell Shady Boo to get with me.
God dammit, I'm on tour now with Lyrics Born and you bastards are making me homesick.
Lexington, selby, dale, maryland, thomas, hamline, university, and w. 7th see me daily when I'm not on tour.
I'll be around in a Maroon nissan 240sx on 18's when you see me. Say hello.

Someone asked if I fear my neighborhood? No, the only reason to fear frogtown is the dealers and I know most of them from school or just being around the way. Half of them are trying to get their rap game up, they show love to me and I return the favor. More of them have been showing up to our shows lately too I'm happy to say.
There are a few small areas of St. Pauls Frogtown that rival any ghetto I've seen. I've only been in trouble a few times in my 25 years here though. I've been pistol whipped once and shot at once (not fun either time.) There are some areas off Western that are a lot like some of the old ghettos in Chicago. I don't live in Mexico City, and I don't pretend to draw parallels. I am happy with my spot.
I love all the Viet, Hmong, Black, Cambodian, Somalian, and Ethiopian businesses building off of University.

Damn the Paul aint the same.
Like rolling down university and smelling spoil milk from the Old home manufacturing place off western and university.
Popeyes chicken off of unviersity. Now its all caged up and turn into some bogus bakery.
Who remembers country club turn into gala foods then in some asian market then into food smart.
who remembers the leather coats from 7mile bargain.
who remembers rondo days at mlk before the rondo center was built.
Who remembers when rondos parade used to go through out the rondo community. All the way to university.
let me take it way back.
Who remembers the old rib shack off of dale street. next to the gas station thats there now
or the wing special at art songs.
or the first advertisement for art song was in the lot off dale and st albans
Who remembers all the hood candy that used to be sold at tiger jacks rest in peace
