kandi-
i know it's lame to confront people via the internet but i didn't know how else to get ahold of you. i've been EXTREMELY disappointed by your "Verb" articles in The Pulse, especially this past week when you just printed a thread from this website. you know as well as i do that lars, dan, chelsa and i were all supposed to write for that as well. it's really aggravating that you would be so selfish as to take the spot every week and not even attempt to write good articles. chelsa and i work very hard on ours and would appreciate a chance for our work to be printed too. we have sent in some of our articles, but the pulse refuses to print them because it would compete with "your" column. if you are going to steal from us what we were supposed to share, at least put some effort into it.

the Fag sez:

the pulse is great for wiping yourr ass and cleaning up spills.

on a serious note, the fag has recently transcribed a message board conversation about the Minneapolis hip hop scene also.

it was transcribed(read; taken without notifying any of the parties involved)just last week and
the "article" is titled "all cocks in the universe up my ass part 2: the story of Minneapolis hip hop."

read it here(cut and paste the link):

wow. i just read the pulse "article" and i am speechless.

i could go off about how this cut and paste job represents a total lack of originality and insight, BUT...

just for the sake of argument, let's assume miss knight found the "talk" that took place on DU Nation to be especially relevant to Pulse readers and simply wanted to share the discussion without her commentary. IF that's the case, then at a minimum she should have cited DU Nation as the source of the material, including the website address and the date she accessed the information. (kandi, you can check out the MLA's styleguide for citing electronic works.)

beyond that, though, I'm curious why kandi & the pulse chose to focus on these few quotes out of sub's original thread. substance started the thread by asking whether the twin cities hip hop scene suffered from a lack of fan support or a lack of acts worth supporting. a number of people posted their thoughts on the topic, and many people mentioned local acts that they thought were 'bringing something to the table.' yet the article in the pulse leaves out this perspective and instead presents a 'roundtable' discussion between 5 cats who all essentially agree with each other on the state of the local scene.

how revealing is that?

There is a reason why Pulse has been lagging behind the City Pages all these years.
Personally, I thought the Eminem article was off kilter and the 2003 Awards a couple weeks ago. Surprised no one has brought that up. Surprised this many people read The Pulse at all!
But at least HipHop has a weekly column now.

Well...well...well...it looks like the hatred is festering....YES very lame move...Sarah.....you know how to get a hold of me....so I think you are a hater and a liar...now. Just disgusting! Geeze....I would of never thought....well...here let's clear the air.

It is really sad that people hate on journalists so bad. I guess I am definitely learning who my friends are....I know I can never make everyone in this city happy...at the same time. Why? Because people either love you or hate you....All I can do is be consistent with those who are consistent. Continue the coverage...unlike City Pages....The Pulse believes in this and the more cds I get in the mail...the more busy I remain. I am doing this all for free just because I strongly feel there is a place this city can get to...as far as our music is concerned.

I try to interview people who are doing shows...releasing material consistently and have a foundation and a fan base....sometimes I have to improvise because we are all on different levels. I could be like Chris or Peter and only give props to people who are on a certain level...but I like the underdogs and I believe in the underdogs. Everyone deserves a chance even if your music sucks...I respect the artistry and the fact that no one is every going to please everyone at the same time.

There are people who I want to interview and people who I have interviewed but I have to wait to release the story until their albums are finished. What do you know Sarah?

Instead of bashing ....everyone should be more supportive. The Pulse can easily say forget it...then no one gets anything. Atleast now you can go to any major search engine and you can type in Purest Form, or Musab, or anyone else I interviewed this year and get basic biographical info. whereas before there was nothing. Hummm....

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to balance schedules on a weekly basis especially during the holidays? You sound like you have no clue...and like you are just hating! To tell you the truth I was going to resume writing after this week but I decided I could pull some stories together and so I did. The piece from the message board was very prolific and I got responses from people outside of the city! How often do you write a story? Once every two months? Try doing it weekly....then talk. OK? I feel good about the stories I have written and the relationships I have established...there is so much that goes into a good interview....and most of it does not get printed.

Anyway....Sarah you should get all of your facts together before you open you mouth....and try to bash me. I was trying to slide other writers into the column...but since I worked for Ed Felien (The owner) while I was in COLLEGE....and you were probably in elementary school....the editor felt more comfortable working with one writer he knew. Sorry I don't know how else to comfort your pain Sarah. I explained that to Dan and Chelsa...your friends who must of failed to convey the message to you. I have been improvising with alot of people's schedules....I can agree the last three stories have been pretty sketchy....over the holidays it is not an easy task. Try it sometime....then talk.

2004 will definitely be different....2003 was just warming up.

I did not write the intro...to the message board piece either or I would of cited properly....but nevertheless I thought that was some great commentary and worthy of the reprint. That was the best post I have ever read on any message board! I think Substance really is a "real" dude for going out on a limb like that. I think everyone should be cool that The Pulse has a relationship with Dunation....hopefully the relationship will grow in 2004 if the haters do not snuff it out.

And I will not hesitate in the future to run pieces from the message board I feel are very profound. I didn't need to comment...I let it speak for itself....you guys are the stars....I just document it.

I could not print the entire discussion because we were limited to 700 words....sorry Ghetto Blaster....I felt the gist of it was better than none at all. There are many people who still do not have internet access (I think we are spoiled!!!) but want to know what is going down with the local hip-hop scene contrary to what you guys feel there were people who really liked that piece.

Jimmytwotimes...I will give you your book back...no big deal.

Mission Control..you seem to have been a hater since day one you especially dislike D.Tekh for some reason?

Anyway....there are many things planned for 2004...whether your a hater or a lover...I am still going to do my job.

You guys really have the lynch mob mentality on this message board....it is sad. I called it out months ago....!

Sarah...instead of the criticism...why don't you offer ideas? That is the problem with Minnesota!!! Everyone wants to complain...no one wants to put their heads together and work.

In case you want to reach me... kandisk@pulsetc.com

You're stupid. Here's why:
You did the same thing to some little girl, calling her out on a message board in August and making her feel like shit. Taste of your medicine? Deal with it.

Next, Sara did offer ideas, not just criticism. She would have wrote the whole thing for you! How about you tell her you're sorry and be a mature adult like you claim to be? Perhaps the "problem" with the MN scence is people are too self-centered to accept other people's help.

kandi- you're not doing anything that hasn't been done before better. unfortunatly what you're doing is unimportant, and poorly done. that's not hating, thats just an honest opinion.

music journalist is often a contradiction in itself, and you're subpar even for that. it's strange that you knock peter and chris for being inaccessable (which i don't agree with), but they write stories people care about. they write stories for reasons besides their own feelings of self-importance.

oh and to clarify, i have respect for d-tekh. i just don't think it's appropriate that you semi-deliberately work him into articles. in fact, i think as a so-called journalist (pffft!) you should be deliberately excluding him, as my understanding is you're dating him.

that's just the tip of the iceberg though. i'm sure you get my point. and that's criticism. i apologize if i'm a little impolite about it, but i'm just trying to make sure you understand my point. email me at laurierec@winternet.com if you want to discuss any more.

What eva'...like I said she can be mad all she wants...I'm going to keep doing my thing. I can never make everyone happy because everyone thinks they know what is best. Some people love me and some people hate me. I just write. She just showed her true colors to the world so everyone knows now that Sarah may act all sweet and nice...but she's really just a back biter...haterific-chic.

I encourage her to continue sending in her work to every publication she can...not just The Pulse. Why is she hating on me? Why the obsession? I sent in my published writing samples...I grinded for years as a journalist before she even picked up a pen! I went to college and got the degree...I interned at The Pulse for free for 2 years...I don't understand what she is talking about?

As she continues being consistent in her writing and we see articles from her EVERY week...she will learn the ropes I learned....that the unexpected happens to journalists and that sometimes you have to improvise stories...every story will not be your favorite but you keep on grinding. Doing your thing...you will piss people off...and some people will tell you that you wrote the best story ever!

Sara knows in her dark little heart that I was never anything but supportive of her and her writing...when they (Chelsa included) started writing again I was the first to offer words of encouragement and support...because I am NOT a hater! And because I knew what they were going to go through....

People criticizing...being jealous...taking shots at your talent...blocking interviews...all while they aren't doing s*it but complaining!

You can't get wrapped up in the haters....they will always be there hating. Can I get an AMEN?

All I can do is smile and be happy. Like I am doing right now....I know once people hate it just means you are doing something right. People waste energy trying to cause harm because they are not happy in their own lives....and as far as what went on with the girl a few months ago....we have already kissed and made up. Old news.

Sara owes me an apology cause her facts are all fu*ked up! And her intentions are evil. I understand she is angry because she can't get anything published....she needs to do what I did....keep grinding...get out there and submit your work to other publications...and stop complaining. Being angry is not going to get your foot in the door. The universe will not allow it. Grow up SARAH!

Lynch mob mentality?
I dont really see that....
Just because a large number of people have the same beliefs does not make them a lynch mob...

Are Christians a lynch mob? Ok bad example...

But you get the point....

Sure ok, you are writing hip hop for a 2nd rate mag, thats cool, do your thang...
But when you preach your virtues etc etc and then you contradict yourself, you come off a little lame....

I have read a few of your pieces and noticed 2 things....

You need to be more objective, and dont expect props because you claim you are a "writer"

Any half-wit who can string together letters together into words feels they can qualify themselves to be a writer....Not a reflection on you, but on the whole "music journalism" genre...

Arrogance and defensiveness just seep from your retorts on this thread..If I were you, I would take people's views on your work as criticism and challenge yourself to silence the critics....

What she is doing is hating...point blank. Her stories are not outside of the catagory you just put mine in....

She is crying and nagging at me because she can't get published.

And for your information...I have never worked D.Tekh into one of my stories. You can ask every person I have interviewed who mentioned him. People bring up his name on their own. Can you imagine that? He is a great producer after all and many people talk about him.

Contrary to what you think....he is one of the most slept on.

And I am not knocking Peter and Chris...they are my mentors. They just wait for artists to get on a certain level before they do a write up. I am more free to write about people who are not getting the coverage.

Oh and sorry if you don't care about GOLDEN, SLUG, MUSAB, PUREST FORM, THE CORE, CHEAP COLOGNE, ODD JOBS, or other businesses and topics directly related to Twin Cities hip-hop etc. Other people really are!

Like I said everyone seems to know what is best. I know I am an easy target.

Kandis:

Glad you can take criticism like a professional.

This (http://www.spj.org/ethics_code.asp) may be of use to you, as a "journalist".

My favorite parts:

Act Independently

Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know.

Journalists should:

* Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
* Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
* Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.
* Disclose unavoidable conflicts.

Be Accountable

Journalists are accountable to their readers, listeners, viewers and each other.

Journalists should:

* Clarify and explain news coverage and invite dialogue with the public over journalistic conduct.
* Encourage the public to voice grievances against the news media.
* Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.
* Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others.

Then again, maybe the SOURCE is looking for new beat reporters...?

it comes down to this kandice: you make it way too easy.

i know that you mean well, but i think maybe you should've taken some steps instead of being a "learn as you go" journalist.

your writing has been average at best, and some of your comments and claims have been somewhat ridiculous. i know objectivity is impossible, but you dont even seem to try.

i dont critique your pieces as a hater, i critique them as a writer.
you speak of supporting instead of hating, but the only support I've seen you give is to yourself. people have offered their support and asked for some support from you. in all honesty I want nothing to do with the Pulse after seeing the stuff that goes to print, my goals do not include holding the coveted title of "journalist." I'm just a writer who likes to write and has been involved in hip hop for many years. but you have people who are willing to give you pieces, who are actually students of journalism, but instead it seems you would rather continue to get your shine on and submit a "transcribed" conversation(which by the way was in very bad taste, if its true you did not contact any of the parties you quoted. those words belong to the people that said them, regardless if it came from a website or not.).
I would be insulted if i were chelsa or sara or lars too, because when it comes down to it, you and i and everybody else knows how bad that looks.

so go on and think people are hating for no reason, reality will set in eventually.

Now you didn't read my posts. I said my last three stories have been sub-par....because it has been a nightmare scheduling interviews etc. during the holidays. It is that simple. People travel during this time. People think their time is available and it isn't. I get pushed up to a deadline and I have to write something...quick. Bottom line. If you are such a great writer...submit a piece for Dunation so we can all critique you.

Ouch. Do you think we're that dumb?
Here's your Dtkeh interview (http://www.pulsetc.com/article.php?sid=636). Nice quote:

"...Detekh of Supreme Beat Recordings is a seven-year veteran of local Hip-Hop production. He has recorded nearly every emcee in the Twin Cities and will be releasing his Greatest Unreleased Hits this winter. Detekh is without a question the Twin Cities most prolific Hip-Hop producer."

That's pretty huge for a guy who hasn't charted college radio or gotten major distribution (unlike ANT, who some people might say is more prolific).

I know Peter Scholtes new favorite rapper, Ice Rod, is pretty fucking huge. I mean his album...oh, wait. But his next tour...oh, right.
POS and Doomtree, too. Didn't you see them on MTV? Wait, I mean, the bus stop?

Kandis, I'm not "hating" on you, I'm just calling you on lapses in your journalistic efforts. And I like Dtekh's beats, but I hate your cronyism.

damn. all i know is if your name is going to be in the public spot light you should becareful on who and how you approach puttin people down negatively because the backlash can either build you up or destroy you... in other words, "you better check yourself before you wreck yourself." true?

there are lots of ways to measure a dj's talents and skill levels. there aren't many dj's out there that are that can be considered the complete package (especially in the TC area). But if a DJ can get out there and play at a number of events and get weekly spots/gigs bars/whatever, they are obviously doing something right and not doing something wrong.

just have fun and keep your head up if someone is going to shit on your parade. no one is perfect. there are few chuck palhuniuks (sp?) out there and there are few dj qberts out there... just keep practicing and doing what you love and hopefully you will be able to obtain their levels.

you have to expect critism on all levels. ever take an art class in colege? you are gonna get shit on and have to learn from it. you just have to learn how to take it and build on it positively. just dont put yourself in a position for back lash you cant handle.

Mr. Thug P...

Hip-hop is more than just the emcee.....it is bigger than that. There is a full picture people here do not see. Excuse me for cussing everyone out....but sometimes these little pricks think they got it all figured out. True we love our artists...but don't you think our artists want to get to a point where they are actually making money off their craft? Everyone can't do hip-hop for the fun of it. We will all be broke forever. I want to help the local hip-hop community create an infrastructure to sustain itself and cultivate itself for the long run. That is why I run stories like Invest in Hip-Hop, BIOHH, that is why I reprinted the message board conversation. I want us to build local icons and see ourselves as others see us. We need to start looking at the bigger picture. We are all obviously getting frustrated and loose our minds on Dunation....but I can honestly say "pretty much" everyone on this board is intelligent and innovative. Summer is coming....venue owners are changing their attitudes about hip-hop....we can't have that. Are we going to sit back and do nothing? It is difficult sometimes to find the right slant or subject matter to write about...I have gotten some extremely WACK cds in the mail and so my job is not easy. I have ventured to cover the business side of things locally to pick up the slack sometimes. I think the Invest In Hip-Hop story was needed. Several business owners read that and responded....in fact I have been working with several for some summer plans matching them with artists who are ready to tour and planning events. Those emcees who are especially diligent and saw the vision for that story will clip it out and bring it with them when they are looking for potential sponsors for their events etc. No I do not regret my decisions or story ideas and I am not swayed by people's opinions of me....just like there is negative there is positive feedback. I have fully accepted the fact that I will never make everyone happy simultaneouosly. I do read many magazines etc. weekly. But I have to be me and see the vision I see. I have great expectations for this year....those who get it...will be down...those who don't will be mean and bitter...hating like they already do. I do more than just write for the Pulse and Dunation you know.....I appreciate the opportunities but I do much more writing for other publications and I run a host of other music related businesses. Everything in time though....

Kandis, very nice, you've just demonstrated your age and considerable writing skills. But I'll do you one better and actually answer all your criticisms:

1) I've never been to a rave in my life. Don't believe what you read on Friendster.
2) I make pretty good money being a DJ. My CD sold 60% of its first run, enough to pay for itself and make a nice profit. Why don't you ask the 1000 people who came to my release events what they thought? It would make a great article.
3) I'll list ten local DJs who are better than me at some things, but all of them I consider friends and have a mutual respect with.
-Abilities
-K Salaam
-Disco T
-Francisco
-Stage One
-DJ Anton
-King Otto
-Nikoless Scratch
-Mike 2600
-King IXL
-Xcaliber
Sorry, that's 11.
4) If anyone at First Ave thinks I'm wack that's their problem and they should schedule themselves off garbage patrol when I'm DJing.
5) As for where I learned to DJ, I taught myself (since '96) by listening to the people above and many others. I spent countless time and money digging for records, learning, and paying dues to do what I've done. You have no idea. Oh, and I've also been published in City Pages, Pulse and the MN Daily.

Kandis, for a "journalist", you sure have a thin skin for criticism. Some would say it's because you're not really a "journalist", but someone who didn't take the time to pay dues and wanted to be down with "the scene". Some people might say that.

Like I said before, a real journalist would answer their criticism and back up their work with more than 7th grade trash talk. Does Ed know you're representing his paper soooo poorly? Maybe he can print this thread in the ombudsman section next week.

I'm not trying to start any drama with this, but I have a four year degree, and I used to be a freelance writer...
When you write professionally, correct grammar makes a huge difference. You could have the greatest subject matter in the whole world, but if you use horrible grammar (which I've noticed frequently in each of your articles), the article will be crap. Maybe you should let Chelsa and Sara help, at least with editing. They're really good at that. I know how stressful writing can be...it's not an easy thing to do...and it's even harder to get published. Editing is always the hard boring part, but it's also the most important part. So why not just hand that part over to Sara and Chelsa?
Also, I know for a fact that Sara isn't like you said. Maybe you're misreading her? She's a very sweet person...

this is all a bunch of crap

first of all, why are people criticising? is it becuase you want ICandy to take in the feedback? if thats the case why be so harsh about it? do you think that will help? or are people just simply talking shit to talk shit?

yeah, she fired back, but she was attacked first.

im not tryin to take no sides in this, im not even in this. i dont read the pulse, and the only articles i read of hers were on this site, which i must say werent as bad as people make it seem.

i just wanted to make the point of why people are criticising. when you talk shit to someone, there should be a reason for it. whatever that reason may be.

ICandy although i dont know you personally, you seem like a good person. it also seems like you might be spreading yourself too thin. and my adivce to you would be, dont even take part in the stupid little games that go on on this message board, its a waste of fucking time and energy.

THINGS I FIND IRONIC.. (please note all bold was quoted by candy)

"I want to help the local hip-hop community create an infrastructure to sustain itself and cultivate itself for the long run".

OK - HERE YOU WANT TO HELP... BY CUTTING DOWN LOCAL DJ'S??

"No I do not regret my decisions or story ideas and I am not swayed by people's opinions of me....just like there is negative there is positive feedback."

SO WHY ARE YOU PERSONALLY LASHING OUT AND NOT SEEING THEIR WORDS AS FEEDBACK ON YOUR WRITING?? IF YOU REALLY LISTENED TO THEM, IT COULD MAKE YOUR WORK MORE POSITIVE...

"I have great expectations for this year....those who get it...will be down...those who don't will be mean and bitter...hating like they already do."

NOW YOU PROVIDED A VERY GOOD RESPONSE FOR ME TO USE INSDEAD OF MY OWN COMMENT FOR THIS ONE... HERE IT IS... "You have BOTH already proven to everyone that you're both broke down ass DJs who wish you were hot. "
NOW.. I WOULD CALL THAT 'HATING'.. WOULDNT YOU?
AND IF SO - THEN YOU ARE JUST AS GUILTY - ARENT YOU?? AND IF SO - WHO ARE YOU TO POINT THE FINGER?? REMEMBER - THERE ARE ALWAYS 3 POINT BACK AT YOU... ISNT THAT HOW IT GOES??

"I do more than just write for the Pulse and Dunation you know.....I appreciate the opportunities but I do much more writing for other publications and I run a host of other music related businesses. Everything in time though.... "

WOW - I CANT BELIEVE YOUR BOSSES LET YOU GET AWAY WITH RUNNING YOUR MOUTH OFF THE WAY YOU DO. IF I OWNED A COMPANY - I WOULD FIRE SOMEONE THAT ACTED LIKE YOU BASED ON THE FACT YOU WOULD HAVE EMBARRASSED ME SO BADLY!
YOU CLAIM YOU DID YOUR GRUNT WORK, CLIMBED YOUR WAY UP THE LADDER.. START ACTING LIKE A PROFESSIONAL THEN... IF EVERYONE IS SOOO BELOW YOU - WHY EVEN REPLY??

"Actually I am laughing at these clowns! They want to sit around criticizing me....I have never commented on them and their skillz....before so why they hating on me all the time? YOU ALSO CLAIM YOU 'AINT GONNA BE NO ONES VICTIM', BUT YOURE CRYING TO EVERYONE THAT THEY ARE HATING ON YOU, THAT ITS ALL DIRECTED TOWARDS YOU... BLAH BLAH BLAH... WHATS REALLY GOING ON??

AND MY GOD WOMAN - IN EVERY ARGUMENT YOU HAVE BEEN IN ON THIS BOARD - YOU ARE ALWAYS REFERENCING YOUR COLOR.. WHO THE FUCK CARES WHAT COLOR YOU ARE!!! I AM CLEARLY OUTSPOKEN - BUT AM I TELLING PEOPLE ABOUT HOW WHITE MY ASS IS??... NO ONE CARES!!

THE PART WHERE YOU SAY I always come out on top and love me for it. Those who hate me hate me because I always get better
WOW - HONEY.. CHECK U'R SELF... NOW I UNDERSTAND YOU AINT GETTEN ANY COMPLIMENTS OFF THIS POST.... BUT DONT MAKE A FOOL OF YOURSELF AND START DISHING THEM OUT TO...WELL, YOURSELF...

THE PART WHERE YOU SAID TO A$ ABOUT HOW IT FEELS.. BLAH BLAH BLAH.. YOU NEVER CRITICIZED HIM..
-YOU BLATANTLY RIPPED ON HIM... WHICH IS SOMETHING NEITHER HE NOR JIMMY WERE TRYING TO DO TO YOU. YOU NEVER ABSORBED SHIT - YOU TOOK OFFENCE TO IT.. AND YOU NEVER CRITICIZED SHIT - YOU LASHED OUT IN SELF DEFENSE - LIKE THE VICTIM YOU PROCLAIMED NOT TO BE.

TO 'ALL THE HATERS' MUCH LOVE
TO CANDY - NO I DONT KNOW YOU.. BUT I KNOW WHEN I SEE SOMETHING REALLY WACK... AND NOT TRYING TO BRING THE DRAMA BACK UP CUZ I SEE ITS SETTLED DOWN.. BUT YOU CANT JUST PASS IT OFF AS BEING IN A BITCHY MOOD AND ALL IS FORGOTTEN.

Julie....

I write for three publications...I graduated from UST with a Journalism Degree when Chelsa and Sara were probably in Junior High. I have been writing for 6 years. My writing is fine. I am definitely under a microscope because people are hanging off my every word from week to week but no one is being forced to read it.

Oh and I toss all grammar and style rules out the window when I am on-line....I just give you me raw!

My job is just to get the information out there. I am not trying to be a grammar pro...and I have never claimed to be the best. I just know for sure that there are few people who have the dedication to write a weekly column for free, chase people around the city and be chased... It is easier said than done and that is what I think Sara is failing to realize.

Which is why I get pissed when people sit back and try to criticize when they aren't grinding like I do every week. I just think it is easy for people to take shots at me because I am visable and people on this message board already know I'll argue for the sake of arguing because I like a good fight every now and then.

I just think Sara should really get her facts straight before she goes talking stuff on a message board.

Regardless my readership is growing....I can't be all that bad. If you are a writer then you know it is always a work in progress some pieces we love some we hate. I have not liked my last three pieces. In that respect I can take the criticism. But I like people to take everything into context and the truth is scheduling has been difficult.

Blatant....wuzz up? I have not talked to you in a bit! I definitely spread myself thin over the holidays every year! But the holidays are over check out my interview with Syst this week! He is a cool cat...! Young dude!

She could of PM'd that b.s. or my email address is right at the bottom of all of my stories...she could of asked Lars for my number...or even her best friend Chelsa has it. Hating...point blank. She needs to apologize.

I think it's time for me to step the fuck in...
Kandi, there is a lot of shit that I need to "clear up" for you:
1. I can DOCUMENT the times I called you asking about the Pulse writing job that you OFFERED me, Sara, Dan and Lars. You told me yourself that the five of us would switch it up each week.
2. For a little while Sara and I DID write one article each week, and they were good too. Check them out on the homepage. If they weren't up once a week that was on Lars (you know it's no big deal buddy)
3. Trust me, we know what goes into a good interview and a good article for that matter.
4. Calling Sara "evil" is not going to help you win your argument. How is she a hater for wanting to discuss this with you. I've tried to set up a meeting with you to discuss this in person, but now you've turned off your phone...How else do we get ahold of you?
5. OUR AGE has nothing to do with this. If anything you should be amazed that we're 10 years younger than you and can write as well if not better than you with a degree in the works. I know you're an intelligen woman, but you could hand your spotlight aside to help out two college girls working to build a deced resume. Who's hating now?
6. Writing an article abot your boyfriend is TACKY.
7. If you really do have so much "journalistic" experience, why don't you fucking use it.

I am sorry it was not what you wanted to hear but life does not always work the way we want it to, you sound like spoiled brats....this is not your last hope. I tried to get it so we all could write for the Pulse, sorry I already worked for the paper...sorry I already knew the owner...sorry I had 20+ clips to submit...when I asked you guys for yours I got no response.

Now you want to be angry with me over some old stuff? True my holidays stories were drab...but guess what...the holidays are over...I have a story for this week...do you?

Why not PM me....? If your not hating?

You girls are crazy! I see why everyone talks so badly about you two now!!!!

Keep submitting your writing....write one story a week....write for several publications like I do!!!! Write solo.....people look at you like you are weak if you both have to write one story together!

Don't give yourselves too much credit because your writing is not all that either!!! It must be that time of the month!!!! Call me...I'll PM you my phone number. I have a list of publications you guys can submit your work to...City Pages takes submissions....in fact I will be submitting something to them shortly! Well then you have not been paying attention....buddy boy....I already said I disliked my last three stories....but I had to submit them because of my committment, I could of took a vacation.....and postponed the column until after the New Year...but that goes against my work ethic. I committed to doing 1000 words for this publication every single week and I keep my committments.

I had four interviews cancel at the last minute, people have holiday plans....including myself. I can't force people to the interview table. Which sometimes left me with hours to turn around 700+ words. In retrospect, I would of went into the holiday season with 4-5 nearly completed stories....as backup but all of that was severely twarted by a computer virus I contracted 2 weeks ago rendering all of my computers dead. I am just now getting my computers up and running as normal today.

It is easy to be a freelance writer but not a weekly columnist. Freelance writers can submit work when they feel like it...I don't have that liberty.

See what I mean by people criticizing....and talking trash without even knowing the facts?

As a journalist sometimes you have facts to check, research to finish, graphics to gather, spelling, editing, grammar...etc. and all of these elements will put a story on the backburner....not to mention some artists like to coordinate the release of their story with a show or album release etc. and as we all know....album releases get pushed back weeks sometimes months...I have several of those right now as I speak.

So there you have it Mission Control...I readily accept criticism. But the holidays are over....now and everything will be back in order starting this week. I have backup stories ready to go....and this time next year we will breeze through the holiday season.

In case you weren't aware, you're stepping on more feet than you know of.

You should pick and choose wisely. When the defensive path chosen has nowhere in particular that you're headed, you'll get there fast.

No....I am just tired of typing....just like you are tired of spelling. I don't owe anything to them. I tried to hook them up but my proposal was not accepted. I told them I couldn't hook them up and now they are bitter. Simple. Life goes on...I moved on...they seem stuck. They are both talented and I am sure they will get their foot in the door...if they just keep writing...right now their frustration is getting in their way so they are looking for a target. Sara thought I was a good target....I had to tell her that was a bad idea. I am sure we will all be wildly successful one day....if they can get that crabs in the barrel mentality out of there! They were once my friends and I am sure after they apologize we will be friends again. I don't hold grudges. It takes more energy to frown than to smile.

ICandy-

You missed the point. Again. I'm beginning to see a trend here. And if you need to excuse the last 3 articles, that's fine.

Anyway, I'm not being critical of your writing talent (or apparent lack thereof).

But...

Your articles are transparently self-interested. Your articles are blatantly subjective (and bad pieces of "journalism")... AND YET you spout all this nonsense about helping the scene, putting people on, being a real journalist, etc... It's contradictory nonsense to me. Is that clear enough that you might understand?

I don't really care about your articles, or who you said you'd write them with. As I said before I'm not hating. I'm just trying to make a clearer distinction between journalism and what you seem to be doing (meeting people on message boards and writing about them to feel important).

And the point has already been raised before, but the closest you came to a real story was admitting you had crushes on Slug and Musab while peppering interviews with forced references to your boyfriend. IMO that doesn't justify your self-righteous crap, nor is it journalism (or of any worth). Same goes for altering an interview with Oddjobs to support your little "this is a vibrant scene" rah rah bullshit.

I can go on if you'd like. I think my point is clear. And I'm not knocking you because I'm jealous, I'm giving you criticism because every time I read one of your articles I'm embarassed for you (and for the community you're misrepresenting).

Fair?

Hi Candy, this is Hip-Hop Mega-Fan Defone. I was in your last article.
One I found it quite funny that you NEVER in your last article said that the conversation
took place on a message board and on D.U.Nation.com.
Instead it was a “Hip-Hop Roundtable” which I was invited to with Aaron Money, Mad Son, RightWords and Substance. It was a great time that night. We shared beers and talked about all the local issues on the cities local hip-hop scene. Oh wait that never happened?

Next time you decide to post something off a message board at least get permission from
the people who post the subjects and replies.

In walks Slug with no shirt on. “Do you mind?” he says. Lucy looks at him and then back at me for my reaction. I take a look at him and see an interesting fusion of JFK Junior=boyish charm, George Clooney=GQ man and Sean Penn=bad boy that I do not mind at all. I bite my lip. “No be comfortable in your own house,” I murmur.

Sorry if you were bothered by the fact that I interject a little bit of humor and flirtation into some of my interviews....that is not for everyone but the women really appreciate it. I don't know what else you expect from me? It ain't like I got access to Jigga....so I make due with what is here and I think we do have alot of talent. Sorry if I can't get the exclusive interview with NAS or MOS Def....I'm trying Jamie. Sometimes words get edited...sometimes I don't have enough enough time to write prize winning pieces.

Young dude!

To all the haters...I love ya...and to all my peeps I love ya more! I just think she was outright hating. She could of PM'd that b.s. or my email address is right at the bottom of all of my stories...she could of asked Lars for my number...or even her best friend Chelsa has it. Hating...point blank. She needs to apologize.<hr></blockquote>

If you want to be a writer, you have to be able to take in educated criticism (which you've been getting in the post, for the most part), and know when to throw out the uneducated kind (that means ignore it-- instead of getting defensive and making yourself look bad)
It doesn't matter if you use bad grammar on a message board post, but it does matter when you use it in a published piece of writing. If you want to be a journalist, you HAVE to be a grammar pro! That's one of the most important parts of being a writer. I definately understand how hard it is to write...you deserve respect for having a newspaper column. Also, when you're writing up an interview, you don't have to act like you know the person...nobody cares, and it's annoying. You shouldn't even really include yourself in the article at all...

Sara and Chelsa will find their own writing jobs. It doesn't matter how old they are, they're great writers, and that's the only thing that really matters.

ICandy-

All you do by writing your columns is indulge yourself (hence "self-interested"). Your articles are about your opinions and your needs, as related to hip-hop and whomever you're interviewing. If you went to "journalism school" you'd know that what you're doing belongs on the editorial page (of a grade school newspaper).

I'm not telling you to quit writing [about yourself, and your opinions], i'm just telling you to stop writing [about yourself and your opinions] and calling it journalism. Maybe you should write press materials for your slept on boyfriend.

All jokes aside, do you get my point? Either dismount your high horse or be more mindful of your writing. Thats all i ask.

Oh and on a side note, at no point have I said these other girls would do a better job. You deserve at least that.

that may be true (although most of the journalists i read are also skilled writers, as evidenced by their personal blogs). but kandis, here's the deal -- it's your name on the article. it's your work.

so when people (like me) comment on the fact that your articles frequently contain spelling errors and grammatical mistakes, or point out that your last post violated established guidelines for citing your sources, don't point the finger at the editor -- own up to it. at least share the responisbility.

sure, the editor should have caught your mistakes, and the fact that they didn't makes them bad at their job. that doesn't excuse the fact that the mistakes were made in the first place. it reflects on your capabilities as a writer. blaming your editor is like a vocalist who can't hold a tune blaming the producer for not cleaning up her flat notes in post-production, but continuing to insist that she has perfect pitch.

if you want to be taken seriously as a journalist, then you have to strive to be well-rounded. it's like dj-ing -- a hip-hop dj isn't going to get much respect if they can cut but can't mix, or if they have great records but can't blend two songs. nobody's perfect in all areas, but you seem to brush off criticism of your writing skills as though words on a page just get in the way of the ideas that you are trying to express.

look, my criticism of your latest piece was simple -- i was shocked that you didn't reference your source and (in my opinion) you could have included opposing viewpoints while staying within 700 words. that's the gist of what i said, and what did you do? you PM’ed me asking me if i'm a journalist.

no, kandi, i'm not a journalist. if i was, would that make my criticism more valid in your mind? i'm not a journalist, but writing is an essential part of my job. i take pride in my skills as a writer, and I also take responsibility if something i write includes errors or omissions. i guess i could point the finger at my boss for not double-checking my work when I make mistakes, but in my mind that would be like Jayson Blair blaming the New York Times editors for not noticing that his stories were plagiarized.

you want people to respect the hard work that goes into writing a weekly article. you know what? i do. it's really hard. most people have jobs that are hard. i know mine is. but when someone critiques my work, my immediate reaction isn't to question if they're qualified to have an opinion in the first place.

jamiel
2004-01-06, 07:25 PM
your personality = who cares

just kidding, sort of...

but no really... by injecting your personality and opinion into every story you not only cease to be a journalist, but you write bad articles. you also make me wonder what the hell is going on over there at UST. i guess they're making a whole lot more housewives than journalists, and thats sad.

oh well...

good luck on your next column. i'm sure you'll have the hot shit for the '04.

I've been wondering this since the day I sat down with my coffee at Muddy's to read The Verb.

But I must say.. I didn't read The Pulse for awhile, and I actually just started to read it again in the summer.
My first time reading it, I came across your interview with Sean. I liked the article actually. I like reading what Sean has to say about somethings in the TC Hip Hop scene.
But did you have to put in the other shit, about him with no shirt on?
You're probably a very talented writer. But it does not show in your articles one bit.
The interview with Sean basically made you look like a groupie who had entered a contest to interview her favorite rapper!
Come one now.. you embarass yourself.

The 2003 Pulse awards was one big fucking joke.
Don't get me wrong, I like Atmosphere a lot. They deserve a lot of the postive things they get.. But serioulsy, it seemed like the whole "awards" section was dedicated to them. What about the other MCs and DJs out there? You say you try to get people noticed and get them coverage?
You do no such thing.
Who was involved in these Pulse awards? You, and you? Were these just your opinions? You should have opened it to the heads in this scene.

Oh, and I remember sitting on the bus and reading your plea for businesses to support the Hip Hop scene. WTF were you thinking? I know you thought you were helping people, but in actualilaty.. it made our scene look like we were starving for money. Like we were all looking for a hand out.

Do you talk of professionalism too? Not to many weeks ago, I was talking to a local MC who had been stood up by you on more than one occasion.

Basically, I think your articles are filled with shit. I have since stopped reading your article, and not because I am friends with Chelsa and Sara. But because, well basically.. in my opinion- they suck.
No where in your articles, does it even look like you took the time to make them your very best. They seem half assed. Basically, like you were "pressed for time" and threw them together to make yourself feel better.
This is my opinion, which I am entitled to, am I not? You can say I am a hater... fuck it. Your opinion doesn't stand for much in my eyes.
You say you're a journalist? Pfft. Please girl.
You embarass yourself, and The Pulse weekly.

P.s This was not always the case. I have enjoyed some of your articles. But these last past weeks, have made me set down my weekly Pulse on Wednesdays.
You say you are going to continue writing for the Pule in 2004 right?
Please, start writing again, like you used to.
I enjoyed The Verb awhile back..
I know you're busy, and it must be so hard...
Blah blah blah.
Stop complaining about your FREE job.
Sara and Chelsa would love to be doing what you're doing.. so start acting like a journalist, or step the fuck down.

In it for the money.....Aaron Money! In fact I can list atleast 5 local DJs right now that will spin both of you guys backwards and shove your needles up your a&^^*! .....there have been way better DJs before both of you and there will be way better DJs long after you! And Aaron Money...I have already heard the complaints from First Avenue staff about your wacks ass....months ago. DJ Vincent who plays the VIP room on Thursday nights is killing you! You're just a wannabee!
