View Full Version : Dinkytown Nitelife in DANGER

Two days ago Minneapolis City Council Member Paul Zerby Proposed a new ordinance to fix issues of 'livability' in the Dinkytown area.
The proposed ordinance allows NO NEW Liquor licsences to be issued in all of Southeast Minneapolis. As bars go, they are not allowed to be replaced. The idea is to gradually eliminate the scourge of young people having a good time.
The Marcy-Holmes neighborhood association ( average age : 60 ) supports the bill 100%.
How about this fact: 60% of the residents in the dinkytown area are ages 19-24. only 20% are owner occupied dwellings and only 10% are families.
The bill is aimed to cater to the interests of the 10% at the expense of the other 90%.
Dinkytown is finally becoming alive in part because of legitimate hard working people who have created a safe and entertaining nitelife strip. Dinkytown serves a s a venue to hundreds of artists across the city.
If you live in the marcy-holmes area or have a vested interest in Dinkytown bars, please email me at friendly@leroysmokes.net - there is a hearing next month and with enough people there we can tip the scales on this backwards legislation! peace.

As that guy from Magus books would say, these people were once defying what their parents said then they got money and are trying to control everything, they don't want people to have fun.
YUPPIES on the fucking board, go and drive your fast lil car and act like you own Dinkytown.

the neighborhood association... I was at the meetings. A bunch of do-gooders spending money meant for revitalizing their neighborhood on more police to bust students with.
They don't even fit in to their own neighborhood, but because the kids around here don't do shit they get away with it.

its true... these people are old people who should be livin in the burbs but would rather stay in the city and bitch about everything...
We can organize something against this, it can be vindication for all the BS that the neighbors in that area have caused. The truth is, if ou interviewd the people in the area most of them want to have a place to meet and have a good time...
There is strength in numbers... There is an idea floatin' around to do a block party there, and we can celebrate dinkytown music and have different hip-hop and rock acts by cats who came up in dinkytown at the bon and later, the loring, even the dinkytowner.
We gotta show everyone what this city is really about and take the power from the people who are responsible for division, restriction and hatred. They need to know that if they want to live in a small-town whitebread community, they better move to the fuckin' country where they belong.
If you met these people you would know xactly what I am talking about, yuppie do-gooders... trying to stick their nose in everyones biz.
peace.

it doesnt help when your school's hockey team wins the national title and you decide to fuck up your own neighborhood. not to sound like a beehotch here or nothin... but i believe that the college kids have brought this upon themselves due to the wreckless behavior in that part of the city the past two years.
i love dinkytown. easily one of my favorite areas to sip on the brew and max out at. i am not big on the downtown minnyapp bar scene or much of the uptown bars and such... dinkytown i think has some of the funner spots in this whole city to getcha drink on at.
people just need to stop urinating on other peoples front yards and piss on their own frontyard... hell. i do.

True, they must have a reason for their annoyance. They are overboard, however, in their dealing with the issue.
Keep in mind that various organizations wanted to sponsor and organize a street party for the gophers possible victory but the neighbors and business said that they didn't want kids celebrating in their backyard.
What they got instead was way worse than any organized victory parade could have ever been. OF COURSE you plan a freakin victory party in case they win... every major sport does it, and in this state college hockey is practically a major sport!
Friendly, I've been living in D-town for two years rentin' from my brother who lived here before me. I've been waiting to get at the Marcy Holmes assholes for a while now. Let's bombard this meeting and give them a reality check.

No, it's to eliminate young people making drunken jackasses of themselves. Bars are not the exclusive provider of a good time for young people. As I read it above, all the bars in the area would be allowed to keep their liquor licenses, there would be a moratorium on new licenses and new bars. Sounds fair to me.

Your facts convey this point: Dinkytown and Marcy Holmes are transient communities. I would say that the transient portion is not only not staying in the neighborhood in the short term, but uninterested in the long term development, property value and zoning trends, all of which affect the livelihood and financial futures of the long term residents. This is the effort by longstanding residents (a minority effectively ruled by an uncaring majority) to enact change on what is effectively THEIR community.

Which would be a shame if the 90% of the population in the area cared or contributed to any kind of community efforts beyond pouring money into cattle bars. Or if 90% of the population were going to be living there in three years. Or if all of the bar crowd lived in the DT/MH area.
As far as I'm concerned, this is a win-win piece of legislation. The college shithole bars get to corner their market. The music clubs that are there (3-4 in a two square block area by my count) don't have to worry about competition. The neighbors can rest assured that there is a wall holding back a viable threat to their financial livelihood.
How many bars do you need anyway?
